Hi everyone,

I am new to this. I am a 28 year old single male with no children. I work as a truck driver and go to all 48 states. I have been getting my mail from my parents but living out of my truck. I have been paying off all my student loans and misc. debt and will be debt free in six months. I will become a trainer for the company I work for in June and have a substantial pay increase. I will then start banking every dime I can to save up for a good down payment for a house and expences for bringing a RW to the states. I am hoping to travel overseas to start the process of meeting a RW in June of 2008.

Here are my questions.

Should I buy a house befor or after my RW arrives?

Could I expect my RW to travel with me for a year so I can save even more before I settle into a local job so I am more suited for family life? She may like to see the country too before we start family?

What age should I be looking for best chances at a successful marriage? I was thinking 24-29.

How much should I have saved besides my home down payment before I consider jumping on a plane?

Should I use and agency?

Would a RW want to be with some one just starting out in life or are they looking for older men further along in their careers

I apreaciate any feedback. Please let me know what you guys think of my plan. Also if anyone one has any suggestions  for books to read  and things I need to be doing to get prepared for this endeavor  please  share.

Thank You,
Jason

Jason,

Here are some short incomplete answers to get you started.

Should I buy a house before or after my RW arrives?

Russian Women prefer to be involved in the house buying process.  This way they are in the selection process that helps them feel that the house is ‘their’ home.  RW can be a bit superstious about this.  The problem with this is that off the plane they don’t yet have the sense of what they want in an ‘American’ house.  Perhaps the best plan is to start off in an apartment (something that RW are comfortable and familiar with), then plan on purchasing a house a year or so down the line.

Could I expect my RW to travel with me for a year so I can save even more before I settle into a local job so I am more suited for family life? She may like to see the country too before we start family?

Traveling like a nomad is perhaps not what RW are thinking of when they say they like to travel.  You will have to present that up front to them and see what the feedback is.  RW are blunt.  You can lay all the deal breakers on the table and get a frank response.

What age should I be looking for best chances at a successful marriage? I was thinking 24-29.Bingo, you get and ‘A’ on that one.

How much should I have saved besides my home down payment before I consider jumping on a plane?

It depends on your income and where you expect to be living (cost of living).  Also, it depends on what kind of RW you bring back.  Are you thinking about furniture and house wares?  An extra car for her? Will you be making extra visits?  Will need more details to nail this one down.  Remember that a down payment in one area is just pocket change in another area.  Give your RW what the areas you expect to be buying a house in.   Perhaps more importantly it is a rural area, town, or city.  Give details that the RW can hang her hat on.  For a quick answer I’d say bankroll an extra 10 grand... to start.

Should I use and agency?
Depends.  Are you a seasoned traveler?  Is your Russian good?  If not, I always suggest the agency route.  However since you have time on your side you might try the mail campaign strategy (see the strategies forum).  The caveat is that even it you do the mail campaign and things go not well, you may end up paying as much as using a agency plus the extra effort you spent.

Would a RW want to be with some one just starting out in life or are they looking for older men further along in their careers.

It depends on the RW. Different strokes for different folks.  Indeed, there are many RW that believe that older men are more reliable and stable while others many not hold to this thinking as applying to them.  There is plenty of both thinking RW to satisfy all.

...if anyone one has any suggestions  for books to read  and things I need to be doing to get prepared for this endeavor  please  share.

Read the RussianWomanPrimer to start.  There is enough serious content to fill an good size book.  If a book is what you want then the classic one to start with is 'Wedded Strangers'.  Click here for Amazon reviews of this 237 page book.

Ronin has given you a good head start.

Some more to chew on.  A RW's take on your job as a truck driver is going to have some difficulty to over come.  Russia does not have the transportation infrastructure we do and although they have lots of trucks, and they move pretty much what we move on trucks, they do not go cross country. They very seldom go from one city to another although that is beginning to change. Truck drivers seem to be considered slightly lower than taxi drivers and taxi drivers don't get much respect.  However, being an instructor will give you considerable stature.

Russia is a cash only society.  Since you are starting out, it wouldn't hurt to get into the cash only mode now, from the beginning.  You've got the right attitude, save as much as possible.  Then when you are ready to buy, shop long and hard, and buy quality, for cash.

Good luck!  I wish you well!  I for one, believe you will enjoy this adventure!!

I too have a CDL but got a well paying warehouse/yard jockey job with fantastic benifits (company paid) so I have not been driving.

My first question to you is about your training location.  Are you going to be training in basic rig driving, full rig/trailer training, local/regional training, or will you travel with your trainee for a full run upto the 70hr limit?  Your training base will give you a good clue on the cost of living of an area and give you a good idea of how much to save.  Also if you are going to be running long distances while training you might want to wait alittle bit on finding a RW.  The others here would have a better idea of whether its a good idea to leave a new to US RW alone for a few days at a time.  If it is local training you should have zero problems.

As for bringing your RW with you driving I might advise against.  Being in a stable location will help your RW acclimate faster than if shes all over the country.  Not only that but you'd also add in claustrophobia to boot.  Also its never really too good of an idea to bring ANY women to most truckstops, much less a RW  that may look better than most supermodels!  Now if you have an assigned truck letting your RW inside of it and maybe taking short drives after shes used to it may open up the opportunity of her driving overnight somewhere with you but I advise against long-hauls.  I took a co-worker (Oksana from the Ukraine) in one of our K@W automatics.  She LOVED the look of it but the movement of the truck from shifting and the noise scared her and that was inside a $650,000  supercomfort cross country rig, quite possibly the most comfortable riding rig i've ever been in.  But as Ronin is fond of saying YMMV (your mileage may vary)  :D
How much should I have saved besides my home down payment before I consider jumping on a plane?
I've been told 20% but that really depends on where you are going to live.  Also in an emergency you can pull some of that out and still have 10-15% still in the bank.  Also the more money you have in the bank the larger your home buying choices are.  Also a bank is more apt to give you a larger loan if you've shown that you are capable of saving larger sums of money.  Also don't forget to set aside about 1grand for emergency expenses once you have your new home (ie don't completely drain your bank account on house downpayment).  Something stupid always seems to happen at the worst opportune times.  Be prepared!:)

Also if anyone one has any suggestions for books to read and things I need to be doing to get prepared for this endeavor please share.
I've probably looked at this site and various links to other sites for close to 30 hours and i'm still not done.............

Your new RW will require LOTS of love, care and attention when she first gets here.

Russian Woman Culture Shock…
