Hey, All,
So, I have a spent a great deal of time reading the forum and it as been quite educaitonal.  However, I do have a few questions as I begin to make plans to go to the Ukraine this Feb.  Yeap, Feb.... I know it will be colder than blue blazes, but work constraints dictate either Feb or late summer.  I have been writing 4 ladies and I want to meet them as soon as practical.  So, here go the questions:

1) Ukraine vs Russia - mafia/police hassles.  Several posts here have discussed the hassles associated with Moscow and other Russian cities.  Can I expect the same in the Ukraine?  I am planning on 3-5 days in Nikolaev and then Mariupol and with a final 2-3 days in Odessa.  What shoud I be aware of.  I travel extensively in the US with with the occasional international businesstrip to China/Taiwan/Japan.  So the basics of travel is no issue for me.  It the specifics on the countries I am asking about.

2) Agencies... can anyone recommend an agency in all three cities?  Even though I am planning on meeting the ladies I have been corresponding with, I want to have a back up plan in my hip pocket if needed.

3) Help with travel arrangements - I know I saw a source listed here, but I can not find it now.

4) One lady told me that several agencies in the Ukraine pay girls to talk with guys in video chat.  These are real girls who are sitting in the actual chairs keeoing guys engaged in these chat sessions at about $1/minute.  Can anyone verify this?

5) Are there going to be any gatherings in central Texas anytime soon?  I would love to meet some of you guys and your brides and get to know you all better.  Of course I will have tons of questions.  I live in Austin, but would be happy to travel anywhere in the Dallas.San Antone/Houston triangle to meet with you all.

I think that is it for now.  I am sure I will have more questions as I experience more in this fascinating process.

Thanks everyone for your time.  Thanks Ronin.

Later,
Dale

Dale,

Great to hear that you’re going to take the plunge!  My knowledge is more of Russia proper, however Russia and the Ukraine bear many similarities so what I tell you is though extrapolation.  Here are the answers to your questions in respective order:

1)      The Ukraine has less hassle.  They don’t require a rigorous tourist visa that Russia requires so the officials have less to be able to threaten you with.  It seems that most of the non-RW scams and shakedown stories originate in Russia.  Still, that doesn’t mean that you will not encounter them, but the odds appear less.

2)      Agencies are a bit more difficult.  It depends on what your needs are or will be.  The first one that comes to mind is KhersonGirls.com .  An American runs it so there will be a mixture of Russian and American business ethics.  This is a plus in my book.

3)      Normally I have a Russian travel agent take care of my international flights and have a local driver drive me to my destination.   Your situation is a bit more complicated. You can have a knowledge travel agent book all your international flights or you can do it yourself.  Being that Feb. is the best time for late/canceled air flights and impassable roads, I assume that you will be spending a lot of time in trains to make it to the towns that you have listed.   This can be a real hassle if you don’t speak Ukrainian or Russian, since tickets essentially can’t be bought in advance.  You will most likely have to get in line with all the other Ukrainians to purchase your tickets.  Here are some helpful links to negotiate tickets http://www.tryukraine.com/info/transportation/trains.shtml http://www.tryukraine.com/info/transportation/train.shtml   http://www.ukraine-4u.com/images/ticket.gif  http://www.ukraine-4u.com/trainukr.htm

If you want to avoid this hassle you can wait for a domestic flight but there is no stable flight service.  Also, Ukraine domestic flights in the well worn TU's has its own hazards http://www.airdisaster.com/cgi-bin/aircraft_detail.cgi?aircraft=Tupolev+TU-154

4)      If you have traveled in China for any length of time you will understand how business runs in Russian.

5)      There is a group in your area, however it is through a competing forum that doesn’t want to have me publish anything about them and it meets once a year in the April time frame.  I can e-mail it you if you are interested.

Hope this helps.

Hey, Ronin,
Thanks for the reply and the input.  I appreciate your time in this and all the forums here.  I have learned a great deal from reading through the topics here.

As for the group that meets in Texas in April, I would appreciate your letting me know who they are.  I will put my e-mail address in the signature.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

Later,
Dale
