Oh my!!  I have had the most wonderful 3 weeks of my life!!  Moscow, St. Petersburg, (Peterhof, Puskin, Pavlosk) But now I have one burning (actually, two, it's my feet that are burning) question:  When in the blue blazes does she slow down, if ever?

Even though we were on "holiday" together, I almost had to run, constantly, to keep up with her.

I had already considered myself sufficiently "experienced" at getting on and off the Metro to move, move fast and decisively. And I can elbow my way on and off with the best of them, (ok, with 'most' of the best of them! ;) )

But, an incident that hi-lighted that she seldom slows down:  We were back in St. Petersburg, and were finishing a long day of walking, viewing one museum, then walking, viewing another "very famous building", walking, another museum, so forth and so on, and had planned to grab a trolley and head back to our hotel.  We found a tram stop and waited.  The tram passed us and stopped a block further down (not a marked spot) but where a larger group of people had gathered.  I guess 2 "foreigners" (she got livid every time someone identified us both, as foreigners) at the actual tram stop didn't warrant sufficient attention to stop, but a larger group of locals flagging the tram did.

So, she proceeds to break into a run, and tells me, "Hurry, Honey, we must catch!"  My feet were killing me and quite frankly I wasn't about to attempt to abuse them further and race down the block, only to miss the Tram.  So, I asked her what the hurry was, and she informed me that if we did not hurry we would miss the Tram and have to take the next one.  I then immediately told her so what, if we missed this one, we would just take the next one.  OOOOOOuch.......  oh, oh, uh, uh, so I guess there are more questions in here, but wow, did she look at me as if I was from some other planet!!

I stopped in the middle of the street and while grinning like the Cheshire cat, had to bite my lip to keep from laughing.  Her look, her stance, her demeanor, was priceless!!  "Take the NEXT Tram!#$??!?"  WHAT??

It is hard to describe her actions, her stance, her body language, but it was very obvious that she thought taking the next Tram was absolutely absurd.

I managed to save the day when I told her, "Honey, I the Boss, we take next!"  Zap!  New girl!  "OK, Boss, we take next" and off we went.

Yeah, we 'waited' for the next but, we sorta kept walking along the route, rather than just stand there, and after about 15 mins we flagged a taxi.

Everyday, it was a fast walk to the bus stop.  Or  15 mins "by step" to Metro.  A fast walk from platform to platform.  And on the way back to the hotel, or while in Moscow, back to our flat, it was a fast walk to the market, and through the market, from shop to shop, right after we got off of metro, or off of the bus.

So back to the original question, when she gets her, Will she "slow" down??

   :?

Next time, on your first day, take her to a shoe shop. RW cannot resist petty high heels and pretty = uncomfortable. That should slow her down a bit ! :D

The RW trait of being first in the queue and not letting any one jump in seems to be a throw-back to Soviet times. This behaviour has caused me some embarrassment in the UK!

dwfunk,

HA! HA!  LMAO!  RW walk for a living and the only way they know they are living is by walking.  The average RW may easily walk 3 miles a day… in high heels!

On vacation you can perhaps triple that or more.  They will not want to miss anything and want to cover as much ground as possible each and every day.  But I don’t have to tell you that.  They will balk at taking a taxi when they (and you) have 2 perfectly good legs.

You have hit on one of the joys of RW.  This is what keeps their legs so beautiful.

P.S.  Will they ever slow down?  Perhaps when every RW has a car to drive.  In other words, no time soon.

Shoes! Oh, boy do I know about shoes!  I promise you, I believe I know every shoe shop in St. Petersburg!!!!  I don't know how she does it.  We went into shoe shops that had no signs on the exterior that I could see anywhere!!  Most of these shops were in the "basement" and were accessible by going down the outside stairs on the sidewalk.  Some of them, I know you could not see the shop interiors through the small windows near the ground, but she found them!!
