One of the interesting quirks about Russian culture is their idea of what a smoker or drinker is.
Russian men have a notorious reputation for smoking and drinking, however, by reading the RW profiles in the marriage agency databases, one would swear that RW are the angels.
RW don’t identify that a social drinker or smoker… drinks or smokes. This is a bit strange to come to grips with when your Russian Woman angel is sitting across the table from you with a cigarette in one hand and a shot-glass in the other and then proceeds to tell you she has no bad habits between shots and drags.
Also, many RW know that most AM will not chose to see them at all if they list any bad habits on their profile.
This leads to a certain amount of frustration on the WMs part. Often such habits are deal breakers for AM. If smoking and/or drinking is a deal breaker for you, discuss this in detail before going to visit.

Ronin,
So true! My lady smokes but not in front of me and not in her flat. She never smelt of cigarette smoke in all the two weeks I spent with her. In her profile she says she does not smoke, so I was a bit surprised. I have never smoked in my life and have no wish to. In the west it is becoming more and more an abhorrent habit, unlike in Russia, or the far east. When I questioned her about it she says "people smoke in the west" and says she does not smoke all the time and just a social smoker with her friends but I am surprised by her attitude as a highly educated woman and particularly as she is a medical examiner!! Not only, that she says most of her colleagues at work smoke!! (mostly women). This brings me to a point about the fact that going to Russia is like going back to the fifties in the west. Many people smoked in the fifties/sixties in the west and it was not considered bad for you at the time, indeed both my parents smoked (they stopped about twenty years ago) and are now in their seventies and are on alot of medication daily. (not all to do with smoking). I have to accept the situation as it stands, although, I am not entirely happy about it . I think my lady would be astonished to hear that my brother is having hypnotherapy for his smoking habit, and out of eighteen adults in my surrounding family, only one smokes(and knows he should'nt!). So as you have mentioned even if they say they do not smoke, it may not be the whole truth.

honestman et. al.
Thanks for the confirmation.
I state that many things I write about RW maybe counter to what WM are accustom to. They say that truth is stranger than fiction. These stories about RW are a case in point.
From what I understand, smoking is increasing in Russia. There is no end of cheap vodka (being that Russian is the home of it). These habits will be hard to bury without the people with it.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. However, if your RW is predisposed to pickup the habit in earnest, it may well happen during the stress of adjusting to a new culture. I will say again, take great care in deciding whom you propose to if smoking or drinking is a deal breaker.

I do not smoke or drink and listed my profile as such. Natalia listed no smoking and social drinking. Since my research had already turned up what Ronin has pointed out I was distressed to see "social drinking" listed. I just knew I was probably writing to a lush.
However, it was her that drilled me over and over about the no smoking and no drinking. We eventually established that, yes, I could and would drink some, if the conditions and situation were right. That solved New Years and birthdays and she was satisfied that I wasn't a drunk nor an alcoholic.
But, she really worked me over on the smoking. Turns out she does not smoke and was also looking for someone who didn't smoke at all! So, after several conversations about smoking she seemed satisfied, although I think I was still scrutinized when I visited the first time.
If you really want to stir her up, tell her your favorite beer is Baltika 9!! <GRIN -- running and ducking!>

I just found a great article on RW smokers. It is in a blog: RW the Real Truth and RW Smokers. GL adds some other insights or observations about the smoker types. It a good read.

| I have smoked for more years than I care to admit, and am now trying to quit. One of the things that I have noticed over the years is that smokers (atleast real smokers) have some very distinct traits that will identify them as smokers right off. The most common of these, and hardest for one to cover, is the way they hold their hands. When in a relaxed state a smokers hand will be in a position as if they were holding a cigarett. Now a story to put this into light. I was on a site and was interested in a lady but noticed the contradiction between her profile and the position of her hand in her pix. As smoking is not a deal breaker for me I sent her a message asking her about this, among other things. Her response was right in line with what ronnin has said. Yes she smokes. She was actually more than what I would consider to be a casual smoker. Like a pack a day. She said the agency had told her that men would not right to her if she put that she smoked. I told her that some men would consider it a lie and get very upset about it. We talked for a while but could tell that nothing would ever come of it. She still writes from time to time looking for advice or just to chat. Anyway the point is just cause the profile says she doesn't wont mean she might.

Badkarma. that is interesting about how women hold their hands if they are smoker. I have just been out for my second visit and again this second woman (Uzbek) smoked. At least this woman asked me if I minded if she smoked, and I would say she smoked about 10 to 15 a day. The cost of a packet of twenty cigarettes in Uz? 25 cents. Ok...... so I drink the Balika 9 !!!! (Next time I drink the Balika 0!!!!)

| Not just women hold their hands like that. Men do it if they are smokers as well. Next time your around a smoker and they are relaxed, ie chatting away, look at their hands. Atleast one if not both will be in a position to hold a smoke. Dead give away. There are others but most are easier to mask. The ones they do subconsciously can not (easily) be covered.

I've found after 3 months in Odessa and 5 months in Moscow, that most women (80+%) under the age of 30 smoke in Odessa and about 50% in Moscow (my estimates). I spent time at both the National University in Odessa and Moscow State University, studying Russian. Smoking is alomst universial in the Ukraine. Also spent a week in Sevastopol and found that the vast majority smoke there as well (80%+).
Most common response they have once you ask them is why they are smoking is "What?? You don't smoke??" Almost everyone smokes.
