Stares from the Crowds…

Today my wife and I went shopping at Santana Row in San Jose (the trendy place to shop in our area).  In a world of sandals, shorts and ‘T’ shirts, a size #3 Russian Woman that stands over 6' in high heels will always appear to attract attention. Well, at least by other people’s responses it seems that way.  I've grown to accept the stares of admiration, envy and daggers of death.  When one marries a RW, it comes with the territory.  Stares in Russia mean nothing. Stares in the States are just plain bad manners as many would say.  Still, whether it is male or female, what is it about RW that gets many to violate their own common courtesies?  Or is it just that I give those people in American more credit?  Either the onlookers think that my wife is a model or she is grand standing or both.  Perhaps she is an attraction or a sight to be seen.  Like Donald Trump with his Eastern European model wife… minus the ‘Donald’.  Perhaps she is an anomaly or a detractor that needs to be removed to ease the minds of AW.

Who knows and who cares.  All I know is that I have a gorgeous wife that I’m lucky to have (some make their luck).  The apparent discombobuations that she or we may cause in our surrounding has no bearing on our relationship.  Still, there is an annoyance factor.  As long as I’m with her the stares are mostly brief.

My wife is still a stranger in a strange land.  I’m still her guide and protector.  She, as a RW, needs no protection from me, however I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable at our haunts either.

After four years, we are still nearly inseparable.  We still do practically everything together as a couple.  As such I have been able to create a micro-environment where her Russian values and habits remain largely intact.  The real test is still looming in the future when she will be doing more things on her own.  The past 4 years has been a good buffer for her to ease into the American culture.  I believe that any large shock to any system is not good (such as cultural shock).  I think I’ve done my work adequately.  Only time will tell.
