Traveling safe in not just getting there in one piece.  There are potential hazards to avoid in dear old Russia itself.  Now who would have believed that!;)  I happened across a great page of Russia travel tips in the Cossack Connection.  It is well worth your time to take a look see to arm yourself for these situations.  They include such things as:
  • ATMs to watch out for.
  • The "Open up, your apartment has a gas leak" ruse.
  • Making the mark by greeting strangers in English.
  • Gypsy or rogue taxi ripoffs.
  • Police traps.
  • Found wallet scam.
  • Pickpockets on the street.
  • Pickpockets in the restaurants.
While you are there, browse the Cossack.  It has a lot of advertising but has a lot of good links too.
