Getting to Know RW on Neutral Territory… There are many gorgeous RW throughout Russia. From the sprawling areas of Moscow and SPB to the towns and hamlets abound. As the Western ways begin to creep into Russia, these less traveled paths may offer WM a greater opportunity to find their one and only. The catch is in the logistics of it all, especially for the novice traveler. Russia is perhaps the center of stories about scams, rip-offs and crimes that would raise the hackles of any street-smart WM. Also, the isolation of the path least traveled adds to the uncertainties of a visit to a strange land. Still the attraction is strong for WM to take the risk in testing the waters in these virgin areas where Western ideas has not made big inroads. One way that is often mentioned as a means to reduce this risk is to meet in a third country or in a nearby large city where there are more Western like accommodations, services and support networks that the novice traveler would feel more comfortable with. Indeed this makes a lot of sense in belaying one’s anxieties of personal safety and having to navigate among the Russian ways to get by. Another justification that often follows is that this would be a great venue to really get to know a RW. To meet in a neutral location where two people can concentrate on becoming a couple by relaxing. Where there is no stress on forcing the “getting better acquainted.” It makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, it often doesn’t make any sense to many RW. This is especially true for younger RW. You maybe thinking about relationship building while the RW is thinking, “What a great opportunity to go sightseeing in another country/city!” And when they are sightseeing they are not seeing much of you nor are interested in stopping to smell the roses. For many RW, such an excursion maybe a once in a lifetime event. They surely will make the most of it in spite of the WM host who always seems to be dragging his heels with his attention toward her and not the matter at hand… which is how to get to the next sightseeing location. Even when the WM makes the goal of the visit clear as day, the RW may go the other way. Without a moments thought, in her pragmatic mindset she knows that the visit doesn’t guarantee a fiancé, however it will insure a vacation to parts not known to her. This is “bird in the hand” thinking which is prevalent among RW. I have written in other posts that young RW in their early 20s are in their prime of youth and beauty. The world is their oyster if they have a means to it. They will have a few short years to soak up as much travel and fun before Russian societal pressures force them to settle down, get married and have families. Also, one of the best ways to understand what kind of RW you will be tying the knot with is getting to know her friends and family on her own stomping grounds. Even Russians have a saying about this in a similar vein, “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.” Neutral territory maybe just trading one type of risk for another and you will have to pay extra for that luxury. If you accept this, then weigh your choice of RW to meet very carefully. Did she suggest that you not visit her hometown? Did she suggest this neutral location? Has she been there recently (perhaps some boy friends on the side over there)? Before you go, have contingency plans if things go south. Tell her up front that if there is no chemistry then either party can call the visit off at anytime. This may help to discourage the party girls and encourage the sincere ones. Have contacts and agency numbers at hand so that you can segway into plan ‘B’ if necessary. Neutral territories are born out of politics … not love or the search for it. Neutral locations has it uses, however IMO it perhaps is not the first strategy most WM should spring for when meeting a RW for the first time.
