Note to the most serious: For the average American, learning correct rudimentary Russian on your own is bound to have very limited success.  For those doing so, you will no doubt learn it poorly and not even know it.  This is because Russian uses the cryillic alphabet.  With its 7 more letters (sounds) and variations on the other 26, the phonetics (which most DIY systems are based on) are not the same.  Consequently, I urge those that are truly serious to take lessons from a Russian language instructor.  They are versed in teaching the nuances of how to produce and key into the new sounds you will need to know.

Hello, this is my first post on the site. :)

I'm learning Ukrainian at the moment, and I thought the following list of sites may be useful to anyone also learning.

There are fewer resources available than for Russian, but there are some gems, many free.

This list is not exhaustive.

Free courses:

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy - http://www.ukma.kiev.ua/ua/pub/websites/ufl/index.htm

'Read Ukrainian!' - http://www.lww-cetl.ac.uk/ukrainian/

My Languages - http://mylanguages.org/learn_ukrainian.php

'Book2 Ukrainian' - http://www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/EN/ENUK/ENUK002.HTM

For vocabulary:

Internet-polyglot - http://www.internetpolyglot.com/lessons-en-uk

Master Any Language - http://www.masteranylanguage.com/cgi/f/pCat.pl?tc=MALUkranian

Dictionaries:

http://lingresua.tripod.com/cgi-bin/onlinedic.pl (EN->UK)

http://lingresua.tripod.com/cgi-bin/oluaen.pl (UK->EN)

http://www.slovnyk.org/

Transliteration (writing Cyrillic text on a Western keyboard):

http://ua.translit.cc (Ukrainian)

http://www.translit.cc (Russian)

Commercial Sites:

Byki - http://www.byki.com/fls/free-ukrainian-software-download.html

Amazon.com Resources - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=ukrainian+language&x=0&y=0

("Colloquial Ukrainian" or "Teach Yourself Ukrainian" are very useful.)

Pimsleur - http://www.pimsleurmethod.com/pimsleur-ukrainian.html

Lingvosoft - http://www.lingvosoft.com/Ukrainian-items/

Hope this is helpful
