Ronin, I didn't know which section to post this in feel free to put it in another section One thing I really loved on my trips to the FSU was the food. I have been to very few countries in the past that actually can cook three meals that you could choke down. When I was in Italy, the breakfast was virtually inedible, but the lunches and dinners were divine. I wont even talk about the food I choked down in England except to say that they have good beer. In Mexico I liked pretty much everything I ate, but when I went to the FSU my eyes were opened for the first time. I loved the borshe, hot, cold, red, green, with pickles, with sausages I loved it all. The blini (little thin pancakes) filled with a multitude of things that I would have never thought of (my favorite was caviar or ikra) or was like manna from heaven. The shashlik (the Russian barbeque) was fantastic, they had several juices available at every restuarant many made fresh right in front of you. The vegetables were fresh or pickled. There were too many salads to describe. The Pelmini (stuffed dumplings) The pirozhki (a pastry filled with meat or potatoes) They were fantastic and I had never tried any of these before, except the blini which it never occured to me to put caviar in them. So to say that I loved the food was an understatement. I am a fairly good cook, and can usually go home and make something I ate in a restuarant. I never follow recipes but I looked up what they put in borsche online and proceeded to make the foulest tasting soup you could imagine. So after very little research I found quite a number of places that have FSU food available. I thought I would write about the places that I have tried and encourage others to do the same. Bill

Food rating system scale 1-10 where one is something you wouldn't feed a dog that bit you and 10 being better than you best food experience ever. 5 being average. I was working on San Antonio Road and saw a deli opening in Mt View CA. They make borsche daily, and a number of soups, salads, little smokes fish, Beers, and a multitude of other things. Europa Express (650)968-1686 2554 W. Middlefield Rd. Mountain View, CA 94043 They sell red borsche in a clear plastic tub. I took it home and heated it up in the microwave. It was medium good. I would buy it again, but I have had better borsche. I have tried it 4 or 5 times. The first time I used american sour cream in it, which is not as good as FSU sour cream (Slivki) The second every every time after I used the Slivki and it was definitely better. Rating 5-6.........5 with american sour cream and 6 with slivki I have also tried several different types of the beers that they sell. They range from rich lagers to thick stouts with creamy heads that you could easily float a bottle cap on. I didn't rate the beers since I didn't note the brand. I will try to do so in the future. They seemed to have a nice selection not as many from Russia or Ukraine, I tried several salads and they very good, again I didn't note the type which I will try to do in the future. Some food critic I turned out to be. The slivki (sour cream) my rating 6-7 Just my two Kopecks Bill Last edited on Thursday August 16th, 2007 12:28 am by 2tallbill |

Cinderella's Russian Bakery & Cafe I have eaten at this little cafe several times now and each time it has been fantastic. Scale of 0-10 I have had the 1. Borsch excellent 9 2. Pelmeni soup good 7+ 3. Blinchiki with salmon caviar 9+ 4. Blinchiki with smoked salmon 9+ 5. Piroshki with meat and cabbage 8+ 6. Pickled vegatables good 7+ 7. Marinated mushrooms good 8 I had a Russian beer, it was good but I don't remember which one I had. On the other occasions I have the black tea which was fine. I am not much of a desert eater but it's supposed to be their claim to fame, but I never tried any of them. 2tallbill, If you didn't know, the Cinderella Bakery serves many (if not all) of the Russian & Eastern European eatery venues in the larger Bay Area. You may have eaten their goods at other cafes without knowing it. I stopped by Cinderella Bakery recently. They have "remodeled" which actually means they no longer have a dining room. They have a more limited menu, and a small number of tables and chairs outside. The food is still good, but there is no way that eating outside only would be considered an improvement. Udachi !! Bill
