Joe,

You have a postal receipt of your fiance petition (K-1).  Soon you will receive by mail (in about a week) your first "Notice of Action" (NOA) acknowledging that a file has been established.  After that it is just a matter of time for them to process the petition till it is sent to the embassy.  If their are no glitches in your paperwork and no red flags come up during processing, you should not receive any "Request for Evidence" (RFE) letters from the USCIS.  RFEs will often stop the processing of your fiance petition in it's tracks.  Be sure to address RFEs promptly if they come up.

So now it is a sit and wait game.  Check your post box regularly.  Get your mind of waiting by preparing for Luba's arrival.

Ronin

Most of all, it’s endure the waiting process.  To help ease that somewhat and to get “some” information about progress and what’s happening go to:

https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/jsps/index.jsp

Create an account and every time they do anything to your petition you will get an email.  Also you can keep track of the current status of your petition here:

https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/caseStatusSearchDisplay.do

Insider information has suggested that “name checks” are the biggest slow down.  If you or your fiancée‘s name gets a “hit” on any one of a number of data bases, for any reason, someone in USCIS must manually do further research.  This doesn’t necessarily mean that there is something wrong with either you or your fiancée, just that further manual effort must be expended on your case and that takes time.  Will they tell you this, no they won’t.  Your only response if this is happening, is “It’s in processing.” Pay attention to any time frame given in any notices you get.  For example, if they say something should take 90 to 120 days for processing, begin calling them after 120 days. To call before then will only get the standard response: “It’s in processing.”

If you get any RFE’s, respond to them ASAP.  RFE stands for “Request For Evidence.” You will know for sure if you get one.  It will also state clearly what information they need.

Hang in there, it’s a bureaucracy, and your gal will probably be more familiar with bureaucracy then we are.

My NOA1 (Receipt date) was 23 May 2006.
My NOA2 (Approval date) was 31 Aug 2006.
NVC sent case to Moscow 28 Sept 2006.
We’re currently waiting for an interview date.

So about 100 days for approval.  Natalia kept joking that because the given time frame was "within 120" days, we would probably get approval on day 119.  <GRIN>  it was close!

Time frame for NVC to embassy is 2 to 4 weeks.  They came in just under the wire on that one.  They do things in “batches.”  Approved cases will sit until there are sufficient numbers to run a “batch.” They very seldom, unless case load is extremely light, send notices out until there are sufficient numbers for the printing and mailing process to run a full or nearly full shift.

At the beginning of July my status was “Preliminary processing is completed. We will send you a written notice of our decision.”  WTH does that mean???  Yes?? No?? Approval came on 31 August 2006 along with dozens of other folks.  So yes, there apparently is a method to the madness .  .  .

Hang in there, it will happen.  Then you get to worry about other things .  .  .

Hi David and Natalia, thanks for the heads up. I ment to get in here and post an update, but have been working and taking care of business in order to go back to Cheboksary at the end of Oct. Luba has aqquired a Personal invitation and it should be here Fri. Have recieved NOA2 and the petition is at the NVC (July 10 - Sept. 25) not too bad for approval. Now the wait for notice that it has been sent to Moscow. Because the wait was so long, and many things worked out here, I felt it was best to go back at least for a 3 month stay. It seems that I may be there for the interview as well. We have discussed going back and forth every year to keep in touch with Luba's family and friends, so this will be the first extended stay. I like Cheboksary and look forward to touring Kasan and other historic cities along the Volga and Don River Basins. :)

Awesome! Fast approval!  That's great!  You can monitor the embassy website for interview dates here:
Расписание собеседований по иммиграционным визам

Currently they have appointments set from 7 Oct thru 7 Dec.  We're hoping to get an interview the week of 11 Dec.  Natalia has a week off, and it will make getting the medical and attending the interview less stressful as regarding time off from work.

Ok, so I finally got back to updating. I am in Cheboksary and Love received her interview date- Jan.17,07. Problem is my visa runs out Jan.24. Question--- Can a private visa be extended? Would be very helpful if I could stay and bring Love to USA with me. I am going to write Embassey and ask for help, but thought I should ask here too.

Hi Joe,

Glad things are going well for you.

I'm pretty certain you can't extend a visa from within Russia. I think you need to leave Russia for another country and apply for a new visa there.

You could ask the question on this site:-

http://waytorussia.net/

People are usually pretty helpful.

Just a suggestion as I am not sure of the practicalities:-

Maybe you could fly to Kiev in the Ukraine and apply for a 30 day tourist visa at the Russian Embassy there. You could even  take your other half as Russians don't need a visa for the Ukraine and I'm pretty sure Americans don't either. The problem is that once you leave Russia you won't be able to get back in without a new visa, so it might be a bit of a gamble.

Best wishes,

Trevor

Was trying to get Natalia to post, but she's a bit shy about her English skills.  She's actually pretty good.  A million times better than my Russian.  The company Natalia works for is the Russian company portion of an Italian pump company.  It's my understanding that for foreign companies to do business in Russia, they have to have a real Russian Company with 51% or greater Russian ownership to conduct business.  She is the Chief Accountant.

ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ РАКЕТОМОДЕЛЬНОГО СПОРТА РОССИИ, Federation Spacemodelling Sports of Russia (FRMS) is the equivalent to our NAR, National Association of Rocketry, which prompts sports rocketry in this country.

The FRMS is part of a larger organization called Russian Defence Sports-Technical Organization  or POCTO which used to be known as DOSAAF prior to about 1991: was the name of the paramilitary society of the Soviet Union, Voluntary Society of Assistance to the Army, the Air Force and the Navy, sorta like our CAP/Boy Scouts/ARRL,etc all rolled into one.

Up until the end of 2004, I was in competiton to become a member of the US Spacemodeling team to go to Baikonur for this World Space Modeling Championship.  The FSU and the USA were heavily involved in space related activites and that ran over into the NAR and FRMS.  Today Russia and the Eastern Euopean countries are kicking our butts in this area with our kids. :X
